Ong Ye Kung and Ng Chee Meng will be promoted to full ministers, slightly more than a year after they were appointed acting ministers.

Ong will be Minister for Education (Higher Education and Skills) and Ng will be Minister for Education (Schools), the same portfolios that they took on as acting ministers shortly after the September 2015 general elections. Both men are also first-time Members of Parliament.

Both men will also assume a second minister’s portfolio, with Ong as Second Minister for Defence and Ng as Second Minister for Transport. They are currently Senior Ministers of State in the same portfolios.

The changes will take effect from 1 November, the Prime Minister’s Office said in a statement on Friday (28 October).

On the latest Cabinet appointments, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said in a Facebook post, “Building a leadership team is one of my top priorities. These changes are part of the renewal process, to reinforce my Cabinet and get a younger team in place, ready to take over. I hope that Singaporeans will give them your full support, and work with us to take Singapore forward.”
