Open season on Mahfuz at quip-filled Pas Muktamar

ALOR STAR: A Pas delegate from Sarawak had attendees at the party’s Muktamar’s afternoon debate session in stitches when he volunteered to contest in the general election (GE14)… for Kedah’s Pokok Sena Parliamentary seat.

Hamdan Sani said in fact, he is willing to be selected as the party’s candidate in the GE14 for any seat, anywhere in Malaysia.

His quip had Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang, who was jotting down points from the debates, shaking with laughter, along with the other delegates.

"I hope that Pas will win its first seat in Sarawak in the coming general election, and I am volunteering myself as a candidate... even to contest in Pokok Sena," he said when debating the president's keynote address at the 63rd Muktamar, held at the Kedah Pas Complex in Kota Sarang Semut here.

Hamdan’s reference was seen as an indirect gibe at Pas’ Pokok Sena Member of Parliament, Datuk Mahfuz Omar, who has had a falling out with the party leadership.

The former Pas vice-president and information chief has been a no-show at the Muktamar, claiming that he was not invited to the three-day annual meeting.

The humour and Mahfuz-directed swipes continued when a delegate from Dewan Himpunan Penyokong Pas (DHPP), C. Surya Narayanan, took the stage.

He said that Pas should give Mahfuz, whom he referred to as “Abang Pokok Sena”, a chance to “repent” for his mistakes.

“No need to give the seat to a candidate from Sarawak – let Abang Pokok Sena defend his seat… I pray that he will repent,” he said.

Mahfuz has been vocal in his criticisms of the Pas leadership for refusing to work with Pakatan Harapan, and has been attending events organised by other opposition parties, including Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM) and Pas splinter party, Parti Amanah Negara (PAN).

On a more serious note, Surya said that DHPP should be allowed to contest for a seat in the GE14.

He said DHPP was formed to strengthen Pas, and should be given a chance to prove its worth.

“If we are given a mandate, we will not jump over. We will not betray the party… we have made the bai’ah (pledge) 10 times,” he added.
