KUALA LUMPUR: Opposition lies and slanders will reach a climax in the 14th General Elections, warned former Umno vice-president Tan Sri Muhammad Muhammad Taib.
He described the squabbling and systematic provocation as being a senseless obsession among opposition parties.
Muhammad urged the Barisan Nasional (BN) machinery led by Umno to work harder than ever to stay resilient against an even more scurrilous campaign of slander against BN and the government.
He said BN and Umno will require a great deal of mental fortitude to remain focused on the task at hand.
“We have all heard how assiduously the Opposition hurl abuse at BN, abuse the government with all their might.
“They are an old hand at the game and it does not surprise me as the Opposition had no concrete agenda.
“The reason why the main attacks were directed against Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak is because he knows all the Opposition's tricks better, and it is not so easy, I should say, to demoralise him,” he told reporters in Putra World Trade Centre today.
He said the Opposition only knows how to provide lip service and dole out freebies such free water, free bus rides and various cash aids in Selangor.
The former Selangor menteri besar, who rejoined Umno in September, said there are many problems that were not addressed such as rampant drug addiction, lack of urban housing and poor quality of living.
Muhammad, who will among those leading the Umno charge to wrest Selangor, also highlighted that crimes and vice dens kept on mushrooming in Selangor.
On another note, he said the Chinese community had been around in the country long enough to appreciate the role of BN.
"The Chinese had been given ample opportunities to grow their business, to the point that they control up to 70 percent of the economic pie.
“There will be those who are against Umno thanks to hate-mongering by DAP, but by and large the Chinese have no qualms in accepting Umno”. © New Straits Times Press (M) Bhd
