Organic farming

Cotabato City - Organic farming has gained official backing from the provincial government of North Cotabato, which even crafted mechanisms to help local chemical-free products reach foreign markets.

Resident organic farmers, in fact, have even got the chance to be known abroad when they were invited this year through the office of North Cotabato Governor Lala Taliño-Mendoza by counterparts in India, Japan and Germany to exhibit their products in the host countries' trade fairs next year, Provincial Board Member Loreto Cabaya said this week.

Cabaya, Sangguniang Panlalawigan's Agriculture Committee chair, said the upcoming foreign exposure and other bright prospects stemmed from the passage by SP last June 18 of Provincial Ordinance 521 or the Organic Agriculture Code of the province.

He said the governor initially convened this month a meeting with resident-farmers and a foreign-linked group to discuss steps on exporting local organic agricultural products abroad particularly in Europe.
