KLUANG: A trip to the Gunung Berlumut Forest Reserve here ended in tragedy for a group of friends when one of them was found drowned.

Mohd Afiq Asraf Syahril, 20, from Parit Imam in Batu Pahat, drowned while swimming in a river at the forest reserve in the 1.30pm incident.

One of Afiq’s friends, Hairol Nizam Abdul Wahab, 33, said the victim had gone to the river on his own and no one noticed that he was gone.

He said that they did not realise that Afiq was facing difficulties in the water as they did not hear any cry for help or sound of someone struggling in the water.

“When we realised that he was missing, we started to look for him and then we found him at the bottom of the river,” said Hairol when met at the morgue at the Enche Besar Hajjah Khalsom Hospital here.

He said an ambulance from the Felda Kahang Timur health clinic arrived at the scene at about 1.30pm but by then it was too late and Afiq was pronounced dead at about 1.40pm. His body was then taken to the hospital for a post-mortem.

“I never thought that something like this could happen. We all worked together at Batu Pahat Mall and had taken leave to go on this trip,” said Hairol.

Kluang police chief Assistant Commissioner Muhamad Laham confirmed the incident and said that the case have been classified as sudden death.

“The victim’s body have been claimed by the family later in the evening after the post-mortem was completed and was taken back to his hometown for burial,” said Muhamad.
