As Overwatch 2 looms around the corner, Activision Blizzard recently shared some updates regarding the upcoming changes that are coming to the PVP beta, with the complete rework of Doomfist and Orisa.

Doomfist's role in the game has been changed from a DPS to a Tank, and his rework revolves solely around tweaking his abilities to fit that role.

Orisa's toolkit, however, has been heavily altered. Most of her abilities in Overwatch 2 are new with the exception of her Fortify ability and her primary fire gun.

Here is a summary of the changes according to Blizzard:

“Doomfist is a combo hero, taking a page out of fighting games. We want to keep that feeling while moving him to the tank role,” Lead Hero designer Geoff Goodman said of the character's change.

Doomfist's changes make him much less aggressive than his vanilla Overwatch counterpart, and one can argue that he has even lost his roots as a walking fighting game character reference through these changes. Goodbye, Shoryuken. We will miss you.

Meanwhile, Senior Hero Designer Brandon Brennan said the Overwatch team noticed that Orisa "struggled with brawling and toe-to-toe engagements", and had to adapt her for the sequel.

In vanilla Overwatch, Orisa was usually seen as a ranged tank, with the ability to Fortify if she was needed at on front lines. However, with her rework in Overwatch 2, she seems very capable of engaging with the enemy on a much more personal level.

“We don’t take Orisa’s rework lightly,” Brennan said, adding that they wanted Orisa's rework "to be meaningful to the game and feel good for players who are attached to her".

According to Brenna, the rework will adapt Orisa's playstyle to 5v5 and "give her more tools to engage in team fights".
