BUTTERWORTH: Penang Barisan Nasional Youth today handed out 500 bottles of cooking oil to the masses at the Seberang Jaya Pasar Malam here yesterday.
The programme was organised by Permatang Pauh BN and was supposed to start at 5.30pm.
However, due overwhelming response, they decided to start at 4pm as there was already a long queue formed.
State BN Youth chief H’ng Chee Wey said they did not realise that the programme would become a big hit with all the cooking oil snapped up in 15 minutes.
“Last January, our president Datuk Seri Najib Razak launched a programme titled ‘Jom Bantu Rakyat’, by calling on the leadership to start with initiatives to lessen the burden of the rakyat, even if the handouts were modest.
“So, what we are doing today is in line with his direction. We are organising a free cooking oil giveaway at 13 parliamentary constituencies in the state in stages,” he told reporters.
Also present were Permatang Pauh Umno chief Datuk Mohd Zaidi Mohd Said and Youth chief Abu Bakar Sidekh Zainol Abidin.
H’ng also said BN Youth would also pay the toll fare for the first 2,000 motorcycles at the Penang Bridge on May 5.
He said the event will be held between 7am and 9am.
