KUALA LUMPUR: Wastage of public funds, corruption and money politics started during the administration of former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, the Dewan Rakyat heard today.
Pas Youth chief Nik Mohamad Abduh Nik Abdul Aziz (Pas-Pasir Mas) said people who enjoyed the nation's prosperity in the 1990s during Dr Mahathir's tenure, were not grateful with God's blessing of wealth and had gone astray.
He said it was during this period of wealth and prosperity that many immoral activities grew rapidly.
"When we were blessed with wealth then, we strayed from Allah's command. What had happened was widespread wastage, corruption and money politics which have been ruining the country," he said when debating the motion of thanks on the royal address.
Nik Abduh said this continued to fester later that the subsequent leadership of Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi and Datuk Seri Najib Razak had to inherit the problems.
