Pakistanis attend Eid prayers, COVID cases rises

This year's celebrations come as Pakistan struggles to contain a third wave of coronavirus infections. The government has imposed a partial lockdown from May 8 to May 16 in which most businesses, except for essential services such as grocery stores and pharmacies, are

to remain closed.

Despite government advisories for citizens to maintain social distancing and avoid large gatherings, hundreds of worshippers, many without masks, were seen attending prayers outside a mosque in Karachi. Worshippers said they prayed for an end to the coronavirus

pandemic.

Pakistan has seen a daily death toll of more than 100 in recent weeks. The county's health ministry reported 3265 COVID-19 cases and 126 deaths on Wednesday (May 12).
