Paralympian Yip Pin Xiu and Sakae chairman Douglas Foo among 9 new NMPs chosen

Nine new Nominated Members of Parliament hailing from different sectors of society have been chosen.

The Special Select Committee has nominated the following to fill the NMP posts:

(1) Arasu Duraisamy – veteran union leader
(2) Foo Peow Yong Douglas – Sakae Holdings chairman
(3) Ho Wee San - General Manager of the Singapore Chinese Orchestra
(4) Professor Lim Sun Sun - academic in media and communications
(5) Abbas Ali Mohamed Irshad - founder of inter-faith movement Roses of Peace
(6) Ong Lay Theng Anthea - social enterprise entrepreneur
(7) Quay Siew Ching Irene - senior pharmacist at KK Women’s & Children’s Hospital
(8) Associate Professor Walter Edgar Theseira – labour economist
(9) Yip Pin Xiu – Paralympian swimmer

A total of 48 proposal forms were received by the Committee when submissions closed on 6 July.

Tan Chuan-Jin, Speaker of the Parliament and the Chairman of the Committee, said, “The Select Committee has thoroughly deliberated and we are satisfied that these nine nominees have fulfilled all Constitutional criteria and requirements for eligibility. We are also confident that these passionate and committed individuals will ably represent the views within and across their communities, thus expanding and deepening perspectives shared at Parliamentary debates”.

Grace Fu, Leader of the House and a member of the Committee, said “The nine NMPs come with good credentials in their respective fields, and have keen interest in a broad range of issues. As a group, they add to the diversity of expertise and experience in the House. The Government looks forward to working with the NMPs for the betterment of Singapore, and the lives of Singaporeans”.
