ALOR STAR: Pas today called on its members to donate RM5 each to help the party fund its legal suit against the Sarawak Report.
The suit was filed by party president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang on April 21.
Pas deputy president Datuk Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man, when launching the "special donation" drive, revealed that the suit has so far cost the party more than RM200,000.
"We are hoping to gather (more) funds in one month's time, as there are still documents that need to be prepared, aside from getting witnesses to testify for us.
"Due to that, we would like to ask Pas members to donate a minimum of RM5 each, while those in the leadership are invited to donate RM100 each," he said at Pas' 63rd Muktamar at Kompleks Pas Kedah here, today.
Pas recently announced that Hadi had filed a defamation suit against Claire Rewcastle-Brown, editor of the Sarawak Report, for suggesting that he received a bribe from the government.
Hadi filed the suit in a London court on April 21, seeking damages and an injunction order over an article published in the Sarawak Report website in Aug last year.
The article alleged that Hadi had personally received a large sum of cash from Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, in exchange for the Islamic party’s agreement to compromise on its political stand on certain issues.
"(Sarawak Report) mocked us, (saying that) if the report was false, why (has Pas not taken) legal action against (the website)? Since then, we have been working hard to get money and find witnesses.
"We are part of this party and we can't let them mock us and tarnish our dignity. Alhamdulillah, we managed to hire a lawyer who had defended our president previously," Tuan Ibrahim added.
