Man, 40, dead after being struck by tow truck in northwest Toronto

Toronto police are investigating after a tow truck fatally struck a pedestrian on Weston Road at Rogers Road on Monday evening. (Arlyn Mcadorey/CBC - image credit)

A 40-year-old man has died after being struck by a tow truck in northwest Toronto on Monday evening, police say.

Officers were called to Weston Road at Rogers Road at 6:50 p.m.

Toronto police said officers tried to perform life-saving measures before paramedics took over. The victim was then rushed to a trauma centre in critical condition and pronounced dead.

Duty Insp. Brian Maslowski, spokesperson for the Toronto Police Service, told reporters near the scene that police believe that the pedestrian was in the middle of the intersection when the northbound tow truck struck him.

Police are appealing to anyone who has cell phone or dashboard camera video of the collision to contact the police's traffic services unit.

Roads were closed in the area as officers reconstructed the collision. There's no word on any charges.

STORY: An Indian police volunteer was convicted of the rape and murder of a junior doctor at a hospital in the eastern city of Kolkata on Saturday.The woman's body was found in a classroom at the state-run R G Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9 of last year. There was heavy security outside the court as the defendant, Sanjay Roy, arrived for the verdict.The case sparked national outrage over a lack of safety for women and led to mass protests and strikes throughout India. Some doctors stayed off work for weeks to demand justice, and better security at public hospitals.Roy said in November he was (quote) "completely innocent" and was being framed. He reiterated this in court on Saturday. "I have not done this," he said.Roy's lawyers could not immediately be reached for comment on the verdict. And said the crime could not have been committed by just one person.During the trial, India's federal police described the crime as (quote) "rarest of rare."The trial began in November and was fast-tracked to conclude swiftly, according to court sources.The officer heading the local police station at the time of the crime and the then-head of the hospital have also been charged with destruction of the crime scene and tampering with evidence.
