Penang celebrates Umno 71st anniversary flag run with Chingay troupe, 7-horse parade

KEPALA BATAS: A chingay troupe and a seven-horse parade, bearing the Umno flag, were the highlights of the Penang-leg of the Umno 71st anniversary flag run at the iconic Jambatan Merdeka here today.

More than 500 participants joined in the parade which saw Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Ahmad Bashah Md Hanipah handing over the Sang Saka Bangsa flag to Penang Umno deputy chief Datuk Seri Reezal Merican Naina Merican.

The Kedah contingent was earlier welcomed with a traditional silat performance.

Participants were in high spirits despite the evening rain.

The flag will make its final stop at the Bukit Jalil Stadium.

Reezal Merican, in his speech, said the seven horses signified Umno’s seven decades of existence.

“We will ensure that Umno continues to be a force to be reckoned with for a long, long time,” he said.

Meanwhile, Ahmad Bashah stressed on the importance of the one big Umno family to ensure that party continues to remain strong.

“It is because of Umno that we are where we are today,” he added.

The flag will be in Penang for three days before making its way to Perak on Saturday.
