Penang cop charged with soliciting, receiving bribes


GEORGE TOWN: A policeman was charged at the Sessions court here today with two counts of soliciting and receiving gratification two years ago.

For the first offence, Muhammad Hafizuddin Hasan was charged with soliciting RM15,000 to RM20,000 as bribes from Abdul Ghani Ismail, 47, allegedly for his senior officer in settling a Prevention of Crime Act case for a Ridduan Ahmad, 43.

Hafizuddin was accused of committing the offence on April 8, 2015 at the Southwest district office in Balik Pulau here.

He was charged under Section 16(a) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Act (MACC) 2009.

For the second offence, Hafizuddin was accused of receiving gratification of RM30,000 from Abdul Ghani Ismail on April 15, 2015 from Lorong Pekaka 3 here.

He was charged under Section 17(a) of the MACC Act 2009.

Both offences are punishable under Section 24 of the same Act which carries up to 20 years jail and fine not less than five times the amount of the bribe taken or RM10,000.

Hafizuddin pleaded not guilty for both offences.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Ahmad Ghazali Muhamad Nadzri prosecuted, while the accused was represented by Ang Khoon Cheong.

Sessions Judge Roslan Hamid allowed bail at RM10,000 with one surety for each offence.

He set April 7 for mention.
