GEORGE TOWN: A total of 120 contingents, comprising nearly 10,000 people, will take part in the state-level National Day celebration tomorrow.

The event, to be graced by Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Abdul Rahman Abbas, will be held at Padang Kota Lama here, which had witnessed numerous historic events in the past.

State secretary Datuk Seri Farizan Darus said uniformed bodies, federal and state statutory bodies, non-governmental organisations, institutions of higher learning and the private sector are ready to take part in the celebration.

Last year, the state-level National Day celebration saw the participation of 79 contingents, comprising 5,600 people.

Farizan said the celebration would be divided into several segments, which included the inspection of the guard-of-honour by Abdul Rahman, a host of performances and parade.

The guard-of-honour will be mooted by the 3rd Regiment Royal Armoured Corps in Sungai Petani, Kedah, with a strength of three officers and 103 personnel.

This will be followed with the raising of the Jalur Gemilang and the singing of the natinal anthem, led by the Gabungan Guru-Guru Muzik Pulau Pinang choir from Institut Perguruan Tuanku Bainun and Institut Perguruan Persekutuan.

The recital of the Rukun Negara will be led by eight SMK Bukit Jambul students.

“We hope Penangites will come in full force to join the celebration.

“We also encourage all state government agencies and departments, business premises and residences, particularly highrises, to fly the Jalur Gemilang as a sign of our love for the country,” he said.

Farizan said the National Day parade this year would also be joined by the state contingent to the Sukan Malaysia XIX in Perak from Sept 6 to Sept 23.

Meanwhile, to mark the historic celebration, Farizan said all mosques in the state would hold special sermons in conjunction with National Day.

“The sermon will touch on the importance of the National Day to all the races in the state,” he added.
