GEORGE TOWN, March 23 — All owners of Penang flats measuring 700sqf and below are exempted from paying the yearly assessment rates for 2016 and 2017, state executive councillor Chow Kon Yeow said today.
The local government committee chairman said the exemption also included all flats that were originally priced at RM72,500.
"This was decided by the state executive council and all these flat owners can apply to both local councils for exemption if they received notices to pay their assessment rates," Chow told a press conference here.
It was earlier announced that all low-cost and low-medium cost housing in the state are entitled to assessment rate exemptions for last year and this year.
Chow explained a decision was made to include some low and low-medium cost flats that had been left out in the initial list due to an omission of their category in the occupancy certificate.
He added that affected flat owners who had paid the tax can file for a refund at their respective local council.
"So far, a total 80,000 assessment rate exemption notices have been issued to exempted house owners and we will be issuing more in stages for the next two weeks," he said.
Chow met with the Kedah Road flat owners today to assure them that all the flat owners there are also exempted from the 2016 and 2017 assessment rates.
