MANILA, Philippines – Foreign Affairs Secretary Teodoro Locsin Jr. tweeted on Monday (August 12) that he has banned marine survey ships without exceptions even China.

This, amid reports of alleged Chinese survey ships observed in Philippine waters that sparked security concerns.

Locsin said he will ‘universalize’ the ban to include even vessels operated by China to dispel ‘favoritism’.

“I banned marine survey ships, amending restriction to France & Japan by adding China. To pick & choose invites suspicion of favoritism. Will universalize the ban. Period. Granting exception to one country will automatically lift ban universally. Exceptions invite bribes,” Locsin said.

Locsin’s tweet was in reaction to the statement of Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo that it is okay to seek US help in monitoring movements within the Philippines’ exclusive economic zone (EEZ).
