MANILA – Chinese Ambassador to the Philippines Zhao Jianhua considers the occupation of the Philippines on some islands in the West Philippine Sea including the Pag-asa Island which is within the territories of Palawan, illegal.
“We view the occupation by the Philippine side of those islands are illegal and so the buildings on it are also illegal,” Amb. Jianhua said.
Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana says he does not see any violations in the Philippines’ occupation on the islands.
On the other hand, President Rodrigo Duterte says the island has long been occupied by Filipinos.
“We have been there since 1974 by the way,” Pres. Duterte said.
President Duterte is also determined to improve the facilities on the island. However, China is open to a peaceful resolution to the issue.
“I think the policy is adhere to peaceful negotiation to have peaceful solution but our position, I have said, we view that as illegal,” Amb. Jianhua added
It can be noted that China was alarmed by Defense Secretary Lorenzana’s visit to the Pag-asa island together with some military officials to inspect facilities on the island. – Leslie Longboen | UNTV News & Rescue
