Southeast Asia continues to cement its place as one of the most active regions for gaming in the world after Thailand, the Philippines, and Indonesia were included in the Top 10 list of countries that tweeted the most about gaming in Twitter's 2021 recap on Monday (10 January).

The three countries ranked fourth (Thailand), sixth (Philippines), and seventh (Indonesia), respectively, on Twitter's Top 10 list.

It's a sign that Southeast Asia's already passionate gaming community is continuing to grow, as Thailand and the Philippines only ranked fifth and ninth respectively in Twitter's 2020 recap, while Indonesia didn't even make the Top 10.

The five most active countries on Twitter's gaming community last year included the top three of Japan, the United States, and South Korea, as well as Brazil in fifth place. Meanwhile, the eighth to tenth ranks were filled out by the United Kingdom, France, and India.

Twitter declared 2021 as a "banner year" for gaming on the platform, as users sent out over 2.4 billion tweets about gaming throughout the past year.

Last year's total gaming tweets notched a 14% year on year growth from 2020 and was notably a tenfold increase from 2017's total.

The number of gaming conversations on Twitter only grew as 2021 wore on, with the fourth quarter of the past year ending up as the biggest-ever quarter for gaming conversations on Twitter.

In the biggest year yet for gaming on Twitter, Genshin Impact ended up as the most talked about game on the platform throughout 2021. The Top 10 list of most tweeted about games also included other heavyweights such as Apex Legends, Final Fantasy, Animal Crossing: New Horizons, and Minecraft.

Esports also had a lot of people talking on Twitter in 2021, with Brazilian organisation LOUD fittingly topping the Top 10 list of most tweeted about esports teams over the past year.

Twitter's list also included two more South American organisations in paIN Gaming and FURIA alongside established and well-known global brands such as FaZe Clan, G2 Esports, Fnatic, 100 Thieves, T1, and Team Liquid.

Some of the biggest esports leagues of 2021 also generated a lot of conversations on the platform. South America led the way once again as Brazil's League of Legends (LoL) circuit, the Campeonato Brasileiro de League of Legends, topped the Top 5 list of most tweeted about esports leagues.

The rest of the list was rounded out by the Call of Duty League, the VALORANT Champions Tour, the Overwatch League, and the League of Legends Championship Series.

With a record year for gaming conversations on the platform, Twitter is confident that it will continue "to serve as the go-to place" for gamers and publishers alike in 2022 as it did in 2021.

"The gaming community around the world came to Twitter to talk about the biggest moments of the year as in-person esports events returned to center stage [and] publishers dropped new games," Twitter said in its 2021 recap blog post.

"2021 was a banner year for gaming, but there is a lot of hype about what we’ll see in 2022."
