Phillip Schofield has said he and his wife have still not discussed getting divorced – nine months after he came out as gay.

The 58-year-old This Morning presenter made the dramatic announcement live on air in February this year, after 27 years of marriage to wife Steph Lowe.

Schofield has now told Chris Evans’s podcast How to Wow: “We’re picking our way through. It’s a work in progress.

“I’m still married to Steph. With divorce… we’ve not discussed that at all.”

The TV presenter added: “It’s not in my nature to hurt people.

"How is it possible to come out and not hurt your wife? It isn’t. My greatest concern is her.”

In his new autobiography Life’s What You Make It, Schofield hit out at claims he had been dishonest in marrying Lowe.

He said: “I didn’t know I was gay when I married Steph. If I had, I wouldn’t have got married.

“When things got really dark, [Steph] reminded me how much they all loved me and that there was nothing that the four of us couldn’t cope with.”

Schofield and Lowe still share a home together, with their two daughters Molly, 27, and Ruby, 24.

In his statement announcing his sexuality in February this year, read out by Holly Willoughby on This Morning, Schofield said of Lowe: “I love her so much. She’s the kindest soul I’ve ever met.”

He added: "We have never had any secrets.

"It's tough, this is not something that has happened quickly, I've had to deal with this in my head for quite some time. We've been honest and open."
