Former Singapore minister sentenced to a year in prison for receiving illegal gifts
A former Singaporean Cabinet minister was sentenced Thursday to a year in prison after he pleaded guilty to charges of receiving illegal gifts, in a rare criminal case involving a minister in the Asian financial hub. Former Transport Minister S. Iswaran had pleaded guilty last week to one count of obstructing justice and four of accepting gifts from people with whom he had official business. Justice Vincent Hoong, in his ruling, said holders of high office "must be expected to avoid any perception that they are susceptible to influence by pecuniary benefits.”

At a Buddhist temple in central Thailand, Wichan Seubsaichan recalled his 9-year-old son as a well-mannered boy who loved school and sports, and enjoyed participating in many activities since he was a toddler. The boy, Reutthawat, had been asking him for a new pair of soccer shoes. Restraining order renewed for Chinese woman facing racist abuse from ex-Seattle cop
On Sept. 24, a King County Superior Court judge renewed a 10-year restraining order for Zhen Jin, a Chinese American woman who, along with her elderly uncle, has faced ongoing racist abuse from her neighbors, Agnes Miggins and former police officer Burton Hill, in their condominium complex. Jin had requested a permanent restraining order, but the court decided to extend the current order until Sept. 24, 2034. The couple accused Jin of trying to kill their dog by leaving chicken bones in the condo’s courtyard, escalating into verbal abuse, including sexist slurs from Hill, who called Jin a “dumb f*cking ch*nk” and a “stupid f*cking c*nt.”

5 Chinese nationals charged with covering up midnight visit to Michigan military site
U.S. authorities charged five Chinese nationals with lying and trying to cover their tracks, more than a year after they were confronted in the dark near a remote Michigan military site where thousands of people had gathered for summer drills. The five, who were University of Michigan students at the time, were not charged for what happened at Camp Grayling in August 2023. A Malaysian billionaire hotelier who brought Formula One to Singapore was charged Friday for allegedly obstructing justice and abetting wrongdoings by a former Cabinet minister who was imprisoned a day earlier in a rare graft case. The two charges against Ong Beng Seng came just a day after f ormer Transport Minister S. Iswaran was sentenced to a year in prison, making him the first minister to be jailed in Singapore in nearly half a century. Iswaran, 62, pleaded guilty last week to a count of obstructing justice and four of accepting illegal gifts such as F1 tickets, wine and whisky from Ong and another businessman Lum Kok Seng.
