Over a thousand Taiwanese pilgrims flocked to southeast China's Fujian province this week for a religious festival, a rare instance of cross-strait cultural exchanges that threatens to be overshadowed by political tensions. On Meizhou island, home to a cluster of rural fishing villages, the deafening roar of firecrackers and gongs accompanied devotees of the sea goddess Mazu, a folk deity worshipped by millions in Taiwan and across southern China's coastal communities. The island, where devotees say the goddess was born, is the most important Mazu religious centre.

A British YouTuber and rapper known as Yung Filly has been charged with raping and choking a woman in a hotel room following an Australian music performance. The 29-year-old, whose real name is Andres Felipe Valencia Barrientos, was freed on bail when he appeared Thursday on several charges in a court in Perth, the west coast city where police allege his crimes were allegedly committed on Sept. 28.

He speaks calmly but Yakimchuk is one of many Orthodox Christians in Russia who are angry about a law passed by Kyiv in August that targets a Russia-linked Orthodox church that long dominated religious life in Ukraine. President Volodymyr Zelenskiy's administration accuses the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC) of spreading pro-Russian propaganda in time of war and of housing spies, charges it denies.
