9. Switch appliances

If you’re in the market for a new appliance, get one with an “Energy Star” sticker. Energy Star appliances — which are designed by the Environmental Protection Agency — are at least 10 to 50 per cent more efficient than other models. This means you save more on electric bills, and at the same time cut down on pollution. There are more than 18,000 products in 35 different categories to choose from, so make sure to tell the salesperson that, if possible, you’d prefer to make an Energy Star purchase.
