Mark Hopkins Mansion, San Francisco, CA

Mark Hopkins never got to see the mansion that he commissioned a pair of prominent architects to build for him and his wife atop San Francisco's Nob Hill; the railroad magnet died before its completion in 1878. Sadly, we'll never get to see it, either—the decadent Victorian palace burned down following the 1906 San Francisco earthquake. But Mary, Mark's widow, did get to experience the majestic home, living in it for several years before marrying the interior designer she hired to furnish it.
