Flood hits Jakarta as monsoon season arrives

Widespread flooding hit Jakarta, Indonesia's capital, on Monday as the monsoon season has started to bring about heavy rain. Jakarta's Disaster Mitigation Agency has recorded 49 spots in the city that are flood prone, according to media reports. Some parts of the city has been hit with 20-40 cm high floods, making traffic a problem. Several areas in West Jakarta have also been hit by floods as deep as 60 cm. Of the 49 flood prone spots recorded, almost half of those are in Central Jakarta where the City Hall, presidential place and main business district is located. The heavy rain is expected to go on till about mid-February. So far, no reports of casualties have been made.
