Meet your summer wardrobe

Vogue India and multi-designer store Ensemble shine a spotlight on 2014’s Vogue India Fashion Fund finalists with an exclusive showcase of their latest collections at its flagship store in Mumbai.

“It always gives me the biggest creative high to see the work of these fantastic new kids on the block,” says Tina Tahiliani Parikh of Ensemble. “Ensemble was set up 27 years ago to give Indian design a platform and to partner with Vogue on this event and bring to the market such fresh and original work is truly satisfying.”

Vogue catches up with the five finalists to discuss the finer aspects of their design process for this season.

Winner: Bodice by Ruchika Sachdeva
What was your idea behind the SS ’15 collection?
“This collection is derived from a fine mix of modern tailoring and pattern making skills, integrated with androgynous silhouettes. The clothes consist of transitional wardrobe staples that are recognisable by our unique, minimal aesthetic, quality construction and versatility. We endeavour to confront ideas of modernity and exploration and meld them with hand woven materials.”
-Ruchika Sachdeva

First runner-up: Ikai by Ragini Ahuja
What were some of the key points you focused on in the creation of this line?
“Practical luxury is what we swear by. Wearability is of prime importance when we start our collection for the season. This collection is our first step into the pretty territory; fringed florals and Japanese leather fan appliqué details are a few highlights from the line.”
-Ragini Ahuja

Second runner-up: Quirk Box by Rixi Bhatia and Jayesh Sachdev:
When editing a collection what do you focus on?
“We ensure that the prints are the focal point, and that there is a balance between the commercial viability, the season, and the concept of the collection. As this is a resortwear line, we stayed away from structured silhouettes, and worked with relaxed fits, fluid summer fabrics, and travel essentials like sneakers, sunglasses, and tote bags for styling the final show.”
-Rixi Bhatia

Hemant & Nandita by Hemant Lalwani and Nandita Raipurani:
How do you balance all the elements in your collection?

“We make sure nothing is over done. When you work on prints and embroideries together, it is essential to pick the right colours and make sure you stop before it looks complicated. Our emphasis is always on achieving that harmony.”
-Nandita Raipurani

[Ka] [Sha] by Karishma Shahani Khan:
One piece from the collection that you think is a must-have for the summer?
“The white and blue ombré dip shirt in handwoven cotton. It's light and easy to layer with anything.”
-Karishma Shahani Khan
