Pets saved in floods

As rescue teams scramble to help people stranded by floods, a group of volunteers is out saving victims that others may have overlooked: our furry friends.

Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) already has nine dogs and five cats rescued from the floods and they anticipate having to shelter at least a dozen more. "PAWS animal rescue team is out in Marikina, Pasig, and Cainta to try to save dogs trapped on rooftops and flooded houses," PAWS executive director Anna Cabrera told Yahoo! Southeast Asia.

She said the dogs' owners called PAWS for help in rescuing their pets from flooded areas. PAWS is an advocacy group dedicated to preventing animal cruelty. Because of recent events, however, its volunteers have decided to help pets and their owners find higher ground. It has also opened its animal shelter on Aurora Boulevard, Quezon City as an evacuation center for pets.

People who need help in bringing themselves and their pets to safety can call PAWS at 719-3948 and 9750048.

How to help

PAWS needs donations of kennel cabs and transport carriers for dogs as well as dog and cat food, Cabrera said. The group could also use help from "anyone with vehicles and (who can) drive us to flooded areas to load the animals in need of evacuation." Biscuits and drinking water for volunteers will also be appreciated.
