Quirky ‘Chope’, ERP icons displayed at launch of campaign to celebrate Singapore’s 50th birthday

Some of the 50 icons representing the uniqueness of Singapore were showcased at the National Library on Friday afternoon during the launch of the SG50 campaign, leading up to Singapore’s 50th birthday celebration in 2015. The Singapore icons displayed at the launch event illustrated various objects and habits that are unique to Singapore, such as the ERP gantry, the EzLink card and the habit of “Chope-ing”, to name a few. The 50th icon is the SG50 logo, which resembles a “little red dot”, a moniker that Singapore is well known for. The campaign is led by an SG50 committee, made up of the steering committee, chaired by the Minister for Education Heng Swee Keat, and the programme office, chaired by Acting Minister for Community, Culture and Youth Lawrence Wong. The committee invites members of the public to contribute ideas on how Singapore should celebrate its historic milestone next year. The “Call for Celebration Ideas” will go on for two months between 24 January and 23 March 2014. Ideas can be submitted online to www.Singapore50.sg or offline via collection boxes located at community centres, public libraries and museums across the island. The SG50 committee is also calling out for projects for the 50th celebration from groups of individuals and non-profit organisations. A fund of up to S$50,000 will be given to the winning project.
