Singapore's oldest Teochew temple, Yueh Hai Ching, reopens

The Yue Hai Ching Temple started in Singapore in 1826 as a shrine dedicated to Tian Hou, the Goddess of the Sea. Its building was erected in the 1850s on Philip Street, and it was gazetted as a national monument on 28 June 1996, according to Singapore's National Library.

Owned by Ngee Ann Kongsi, a charitable foundation, the temple underwent extensive restoration works between October 2011 and this year, involving a team of 45 craftsmen from Swatow, China.

The work, which involved conservation of the temple's gold gilding, restoration of its timber structure and more than 100 ceramic figurines on its roof, set the foundation back by a hefty $7.5 million.

Check out some pictures of the temple's restoration process, shared exclusively with Yahoo Singapore, as well as its official opening on Monday, 31 March 2014.
