Starmobile Engage 9i is local brand's first Intel tablet

Just a day after CloudFone announced the CloudPad 800w, an P8,999 Android tablet powered by an Intel processor, Starmobile has unveiled an Intel tablet of its own. The Starmobile Engage 9i packs the same 2GHz dual-core Intel Atom Z2580 chip as the CloudFone slate, but the rest of its specs are more desirable. Also, the Engage looks more gorgeous, featuring a metallic frame and an all-glass finish on the back. If you've come across the Sony Xperia Z Ultra or Xperia Tablet Z, you know what to expect here.

The Starmobile Engage 9i is slightly larger, too. Its screen measures 8.9 inches diagonally and has a full-HD resolution of 1,920 x 1,200 with IPS technology and a 16:10 wide-screen aspect ratio. In theory, all that tech should lead to a superior picture quality and help the tablet stand out from competitors in the same price point.

Besides an Intel Atom processor with hyper-threading technology for improved performance, you also get Android Jelly Bean 4.2.2, 2GB of RAM, and 16GB of onboard storage. As usual, storage is expandable via a microSD card up to 32GB in capacity. The tablet is also equipped with 5- and 2-megapixel rear and front cameras. The sealed battery is rated at 6,500mAh, with a quoted video-playback and Web-browsing time of 8 and 10 hours, respectively.

At P9,990, the Engage 9i is more expensive than the CloudFone CloudPad 800w, though not by much. According to Starmobile, its first Intel-based device will be available in stores nationwide beginning first week of February. (By Alora Uy Guerrero and Ramon Lopez)
