KUALA LUMPUR: Physical abuse was the highest recorded form of abuse towards children between 2015 and 2016, the Dewan Rakyat was told today.

Deputy Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Azizah Mohd Dun said physical abuse cases numbered 2,470, or 53.09 per cent of all child abuse cases.

This was followed by sexual abuse (2,012 or 43.25 per cent) and emotional abuse (170 or 3.65 per cent).

"Physical abuse was the highest in the number of child abuse cases reported to the Welfare Department," she said in response to a question by Datuk Dr Shamsul Anuar Nasarah (BN-Lenggong).

Shamsul had asked on the forms of child abuse, factors leading to this and how the ministry intended to tackle it.

Azizah (BN-Beaufort) said family spats, parental negligence, financial problems, stress at work as well as a lack of religious education and parenting knowledge were factors leading to child abuse cases.

Azizah added that among the measures being taken to resolve the issue were amendments to the Child Act 2001, a National Council for Children, Children Protection Policy, counselling services and Children's Home.
