Emotions were high as the heart-pounding tradition of building human towers made a return to Tarragona, Spain, where thousands of spellbound spectators gathered for the city's biennial competition.
Over 40 'colles' (teams) gathered in the historic Tarraco Arena Plaça, a former bullfighting ring, to take part in the event, now in its 29th edition since first debuting in 1932.
Jaw-dropping photos capture the sea of people watching on as hundreds of brave participants rose higher and higher in their 'castells'.
Here are some of the most stunning images from the event:
STORY: From how an AI artist broke records with a painting, to an algorithm that might tell us how pigs feel... this is AI Weekly.:: AI WeeklyNearly $1.1 million - that's how much a painting by an AI robot sold for at a Sotheby's auction.:: Ai-Da Robot StudioThe work - called 'A.I. God' - is an impressionistic portrait of computer scientist Alan Turing. It makes artist robot Ai-Da the first AI machine to have its work sold by a major auction house."My artwork is a portrait of Alan Turing, the brilliant British mathematician who laid the foundation for modern computing and artificial intelligence. The portrait has a fractured and layered quality, reflecting our current, fragmented and multifaceted worlds."Has AI worked out whether pigs sound happy or sad?European scientists think they may have done so with an AI algorithm.Their aim is to create a tool that can decode pigs' calls and alert farmers about their well-being.Elodie Mandel-Briefer is a co-lead of the study.“So, we had this huge database of calls that are producing specific emotions, specific contexts by many different pigs and kinds of pigs and ages. And then we developed AI, so artificial intelligence that could tell us, be trained to tell us if the calls that we recorded were emotionally positive or negative.”The fallout between China and the U.S. over AI chips ramped up again.Washington ordered Taiwan's TSMC to stop shipments of advanced chips to some Chinese customers. The semiconductors are often used in AI applications.Beijing said the order proved Washington was "playing the Taiwan card" to raise tensions in the Taiwan Strait. And the Vatican has joined in with the AI boom.Working with tech firm Microsoft and a company that specializes in digitizing heritage sites...It launched a digital replica of St. Peter’s Basilica and two AI-enabled exhibitions.Visitors now have virtual access to the Vatican's Renaissance-era treasures, and enhanced tours.

STORY: China's government faced mounting anger Wednesday over its handling of the deadly car attack there earlier in the week - and appeared to be taking steps to limit news of the incident. On Monday, a man drove into a crowd at a sports center, killing 35 and injuring 43. But the government took nearly a day to announce the death toll, and the incident has been little reported by state media. Some online posts criticising the government's response, or questioning what the attack means for Chinese society, were rapidly removed by authorities.Candles and flowers that had been laid at the scene on Tuesday evening at the sports center's west gate later disappeared.A Reuters reporter on the scene said they were removed overnight. The west side of the sports center was blocked with metal barriers and guarded by security.Despite the efforts to clear the site, many kept dropping off fresh flowers on Wednesday morning. “It was just a spontaneous feeling that I had (when I came to lay the flowers). Even though I didn’t know them personally, it felt like those time when I had family members pass away in the past. So I (kind of) understand that feeling, and this is my feeling.”“We need to fundamentally improve the happiness of our people, to ensure equality for everyone. Also, there shouldn’t be extreme thoughts. Innocent people are involved here – but what did they have to do with anything?"Local police have named the suspect as a 62-year-old man with the surname Fan. He is being treated at a hospital for serious injuries after apparently stabbing himself following the attack.Investigators say the incident was seemingly triggered by the man's anger over his divorce.Chinese authorities on Wednesday called for 'full efforts' to treat those injured in the attack.
