Piers Morgan claims Dominic Cummings 'almost single-handedly destroyed lockdown' as he questions what aide 'has' on Boris Johnson
Piers Morgan has claimed that the Prime Minister's chief aide Dominic Cummings has "almost single-handedly destroyed" the UK lockdown.
The Good Morning Britain presenter returned to the show with co-host Susanna Reid on Monday after the pair had a week off and was back with his signature fiery statements within minutes.
He told the cameras that he believes Mr Cummings not only broke the UK quarantine rules by driving 260 miles to Durham with his family at the peak of the pandemic, but that the continued defence of his actions had undermined trust in Government.
The adviser, whose said he feared that he and his wife would be unable to look after their child if they became unwell with Covid-19, refused to apologise for his actions during a televised press conference from Downing Street last week. The aide also claimed he drove to a town 25 miles away from his parents' home, Barnard Castle, to "test his eyesight" before driving back to London.
Morgan said: "So what Dominic Cummings has almost single-handedly done is he's destroyed the lockdown.
"By doing what he did, refusing to even apologise, refusing to admit that anything he did was wrong, even though none of us could do what he did at the time that he did it - by doing that he has destroyed the lockdown.
"He has destroyed trust in the government, Boris Johnson still stands by him, inexplicably. God knows what Cummings has on Boris Johnson, but it must be bad."
His co-host responded by voicing the concerns explored around the UK over the past two weeks.
Reid said: "If the person who helps set the rules can break the rules, why should anyone else stick to the rules?"
Morgan agreed, adding: "Britain has basically gone 'forget the rule'. ‘It’s one rule for them and one rule for us."
A petition calling for Mr Cummings' resignation has garnered more than 1 million signatures.
