Piers Morgan says Derek Draper 'isn't out of the woods' following Kate Garraway update

Piers Morgan has delivered clarification on Kate Garraway's husband's condition after coverage of her latest comments on his health generated headlines that weren't necessarily reflective of the reality of the situation.

Garraway, 53, said over the weekend that Derek Draper had gone from a deeper coma into a minimum state of consciousness as his body still reels from the effects of the coronavirus.

Morgan read out a statement from Garraway's representative on GMB Monday morning as it was emphasised Draper still had a way to go toward recovery.

He went on to read: "'These headlines give a level of optimism that may not yet be justified, we hope, as does Kate there will be more evidence of a recovery but it will be a very slow and uncertain path'."

The journalist went on to add that Garraway would be on the programme on Wednesday to discuss his situation.

"Derek isn't in any way out of the woods on this sadly and he's in a very serious and critical condition," he added.

Draper was admitted to hospital with the coronavirus back in March before being put into an induced coma. While he is now "coronavirus-free" he is yet to regain full consciousness.

Garraway said in the interview with Hello! magazine that she believes Draper can hear and that "sometimes he opens his eyes".

The couple share two children, Darcey, 14 and 10-year-old Billy. Recently, Garraway's I'm A Celebrity jungle campmate Myles Stephenson shared that he was "looking out" for the two youngsters during the difficult time for the family.
