Pinoys still unsure about whom to vote for

Although elections are less than a month away, Filipino netizens seem to be taking their time in deciding on names to mark on their ballots.

More than two out of five respondents in a poll posted on the Yahoo! Philippines frontpage have yet prepared the list of candidates they will vote on May 13.

Of the total 46,350 Yahoo! users who answered the April 8-15 poll, 43 percent (19,784 respondents) said their candidate lists are not ready yet.

Only 24 percent (11,170 respondents) meanwhile said they know who they are voting into national and local positions.

On the other hand, 33 percent (15,396 respondents) said they are not voting.

More than 52 million Filipinos have registered to vote in the midterms polls, Commission on Elections (Comelec) data show.

President Benigno Aquino III has also declared May 13 a non-working holiday to allow workers to participate in the elections.

A total of 18,050 officials will be elected in 2013. These include 12 senators to replace those whose six-year terms will expire this year.

Legislative and executive positions are also at stake in the country's 80 provinces, 143 cities and 14,091 municipalities.

A Yahoo! poll which ran after Comelec last year revealed the Senate candidate list showed that Pinoy netizens had little enthusiasm about the available choices.

Asked how they felt about the list of senatorial candidates 65 percent (12,827) of the total 19,657 respondents chose the answer "not excited."

"Elated with new faces" was the answer preferred by 13 percent (2,544) of respondents, while 22 percent (4,286) said they are not voting.
