ALOR STAR: PKR leaders who were expected to attend Pas' 63rd Muktamar today were nowhere to be found – with the notable exception of one of its vice-presidents, Dr Shaharuddin Badaruddin.
In his opening speech, Pas secretary-general Datuk Takiyuddin Hassan announced Dr Shaharuddin as “one of the observers attending the party's general assembly.”
Other PKR leaders and members were absent from the Muktamar's venue – Kompleks Pas Kedah.
It is likely that PKR leaders’ no-show is due to Pas having announced that it is reconsidering its ties with the party – not to mention Pas’ recent condemnation of several PKR leaders for their criticism of the Islamic party and its leaders.
It is understood that PKR will be holding a convention for its Penang division today, which will kick off in the afternoon.
Among PKR leaders attending the Penang convention are president Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali and vice-presidents Nurul Izzah Anwar, Rafizi Ramli and Dr Xavier Jayakumar.
Last Wednesday, Takiyuddin said that although a motion to review ties with PKR was submitted by Pas divisions nationwide, the Islamic party will still invite PKR leaders to attend the Muktamar's opening ceremony today.
He also said that several top PKR leaders had confirmed their attendance.
Yesterday, all three Pas wings moved the motion to end its “tahaluf siyasi” (political cooperation) with PKR, and warned Azmin and Rafizi that they will not receive Pas’ support in the upcoming 14th general election.
