PETALING JAYA, Feb 8 — PKR Deputy Youth Chief Afif Bahardin revealed a voice recording alleging the abuse of votes in the Permatang Pauh constituency.
Afif claimed the recording is of a speech by a high-ranking member in Permatang Pauh Umno Division saying that they had secretly transferred over 800 police voters into the seat electoral roll.
“We are shocked and perplexed over the claims made in the audio recording. If the recording is true, it means there is manipulation in the electoral process involving early and postal votes by Umno and such actions are being supported by the Police and the Election Commission (EC),’’ he said at a press conference at PKR headquarters here today.
The 1 minute and 17 seconds audio recording was played at the press conference where a man is heard giving a speech detailing police voters from various locations were secretly being moved to the constituency.
“Not many know of our work which is done in secret. We have received bonus voters, over 800 police voters from Tanjung, Datuk Keramat and Penang Road who have been transferred to Permatang Pauh in secret,’’ said the man in the recording, which was followed by applause from the audience.
“They are working at the IPD (District Police Headquarters) and in IPK (Police Contingent Headquarters) but they are voting in Permatang Pauh. We cannot tell our strategies and the technicalities involved to anyone. However I’m telling you, the chosen branch chief, youth chief, Women’s chief and branch secretary to bolster confidence,’’ the man added.
Afif, who is also the Seberang Jaya assemblyman, claimed the audio recording was made during an Umno event that took place at the Seberang Prai Polytechnic School on January 28.
PKR Vice-president Nurul Izzah Anwar, who was also present, wants the police and the EC to investigate the wrongdoings in the speech.
“The claims made in the audio recording is putting the integrity of the EC in question. We want the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Comission (MACC) to investigate the matter as an impartial agency.
“We also want the jurisdiction of MACC to include voter manipulation as acts of corruption,’’ said Nurul Izzah.
Permatang Pauh is currently held by PKR president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail who won the seat in the 2015 by-election with a majority of 8,841 votes.
On January 25, Nurul Izzah also made claims that an influx of 5,000 voters had been inducted into the Wangsa Maju constituency by dubious means.
