SINGAPORE — Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong on Monday (3 October) warned of fake emails purportedly from him.

In a post on his Facebook page, Lee said, “The content of the email varies – the example here thanks the recipient for their contributions to Singapore. The scammers are relentless."

He advised members of the public to ignore such an email and not to forward it to their friends and family. They can also visit www.scamalert.sg or call the anti-scam hotline at 1800-722-6688 for more information.

A sample of such a fake email in Lee's post shows that the scammers have inserted his name along with other information including the contact details of the Prime Minister's Office.

Lee has been targeted by scammers on a number of occasions previously.

In April, police issued an advisory to warn of fake online articles of Lee purportedly endorsing investment in cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin and Ethereum. A year earlier, Lee said on his Facebook that his Twitter profile has been used without his authorisation on a blockchain platform for cryptocurrency speculation.

In March 2020, Lee also warned on his Facebook that a fake email purportedly sent by him was asking the public for "contributions and thoughts" amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

In 2019, the Monetary Authority of Singapore warned the public of a fraudulent website soliciting bitcoin investments by using fake comments attributed to Lee.
