PM Lee opens new community club

More than 3,000 residents of Punggol North turned up to watch Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong officially open Punggol 21 Community Club on Sunday, media reports said.

Located right beside Punggol Plaza and near recreational parks at Punggol Point and Tebing Lane, the club offers facilities such as a SingPost branch, traditional Chinese medicine clinic, McDonalds restaurant and HDB branch office.

The CC also features mural walls made of 10,000 tiles drawn and designed by Punggol residents. It is also the first in Singapore to be awarded a Greenmark Gold Plus for its eco-friendly features, like the use of natural ventilation as well as motion sensors which automatically turn down power supply when not in use.

In his speech, PM Lee praised MP for Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC Penny Low and her team for their efforts to transform the area.

I'll like to congratulate Penny Low and her team of grassroot leaders who have worked very hard to make this a success. Penny has been here now 14 years since 2001, and some of her grassroot leaders have been with her from the beginning, also 14 years and working away, he said.

They started from scratch. It was a brand-new town - they had to set up everything; the RCs, the network, the facilities; not enough buses, not enough childcare, not enough schools - so many problems. But they worked at it year after year, and consistently, and I think they have got it more or less arriving now.
