PNP-Northern Samar On Alert

5 December 2012

CATARMAN, Northern Samar - The Philippine National Police (PNP) in Northern Samar has confirmed the presence of private armed groups in the province which it claims are maintained by some local politicians.

Sr. Supt. Isaias Tonog, provincial director of the PNP in Northern Samar, speaking during the 25th Northern Samar Peace and Development Forum (NSDF) the other day at the 2nd Northern Samar Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Function hall here, said these private armed groups are now being identified by the PNP here.

Tonog said these such armed groups come from Eastern Samar, Samar and Cavite provinces and "they are maintained by local politicians for the coming 2013 elections."

He said the PNP in the province is now at work in finding out particular details about these private armed groups who might be commissioned and deployed to create terror in the province during the mid-term election next year.

However, Tonog said Northern Samar is not yet in the hot list of the Commission on Elections as there was no record or presence of violence here in the last elections.
