PNP tie the series with Malacanang at UNTV Cup 5 Finals

QUEZON CITY, Philippines — Three-time runner-up PNP Responders forced a do-or-die game in the best-of-three series of the UNTV Cup Season 5 when the team toppled Malacañang Kamao in Smart- Araneta Coliseum on Tuesday with final scores, 67-61.

Two-time MVP Ollan “The Sniper” Omiping buried 21 points to lead the PNP Team in Game 2 which was why he was hailed as the Best Player of the Game.

The PNP team marked its first time to win in game 2 as they have set foot on the finals hard court of the league of public servants for the fourth time.

Omiping said, “Nararamdaman ko mukhang eto na talaga. Sabi ko nga, ngayon lang kami nanalo ng Game 2. Ngayon lang din kami nanalo sa Araneta, so yung mga sitwasyon parang pumapabor papunta sa amin (I feel this is it. I said to myself,  ‘This is the first time we have won in Game 2. This is also our first time to win in Smart-Araneta Coliseum. So the situation seems to be favorable for us’).”

The PNP Responders dominated the ball game with a one-point lead at the end of the first quarter, 16-15.

The PNP invested tight defense to lift the advantage to 10 points towards the end of the second quarter, 38-28.

As the second half of the game entered, PNP still applied tight defense, with only three Kamao players scoring in the third quarter. The quarter ended with the PNP leading by 7 points, 54-47.

Malacañang Kamao was able to tie the ball game at 54-54, in the last 7 minutes and 49 seconds.

Coach Eric Samson said, “Actually, very hard game itong nangyari sa amin na ito ‘no, pero definitely yung depensa naman yung nag-ano sa amin, eh. Nag-ignite para kami manalo, yung depensa talaga. Coming game 3, duon pa rin kami po focus at the same time mental focus.”

(Actually, it was a very hard game. But definitely, our defense worked. We ignited for the win. Our tight defense worked. Come game 3, we will still focus on defense, at the same time, mental focus.)

Both teams vow to exert all-out efforts in their last battle on Tuesday at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.

Malacanang Kamao Head Coach Louie Gonzales expressed, “We cannot play na isa o dalawang players lang. Dapat it needs to be a collective effort. Kaya kami nandito, kasi trinabaho namin yun . Trinabaho namin lahat… we really need to work it out. Kailangang hindi mangyari yun (mga errors namin) pagdating sa Game 3.”

(We cannot play with only one or two players. It needs to be a collective effort. We are here because we worked for that. We exerted every effort. We really need to work it out. Our errors now must not happen in Game 3.)

PNP Head Coach Eric Samson added, “ Ulitin ko, keep on supporting PNP. Sana makuha natin yung game 3 na ito “
