The force has released CCTV taken on the afternoon the pair went missing, of James perched on his dad’s shoulders.
An urgent appeal for information on the whereabouts of James and his father has been issued. It read: "We are releasing this footage as we need your help to locate missing father Ian Malone and his four-year-old son James.
"They were last seen about 10.15am on Sunday when James was playing with his father Ian, 44, near an address in Rowlands Gill.
"We've been carrying out enquiries to locate Ian and James ever since. Earlier this week we released images of Ian but were unable to name James for legal reasons. Now we're in a position to name James and release CCTV of Ian carrying James on Sunday."
Chief Superintendent Sav Patsalos said: “Our top priority is the welfare of Ian and James and the focus of our investigation is making sure we can locate them safe and well.
“We have carried out a number of enquiries in recent days but know that assistance from the public could be crucial to tracing their whereabouts."
