IPOH, Feb 19 — Thirty-six secret society members linked to numerous murders, extortions, robberies, arson and drug trafficking were taken into custody following a special crackdown on organised crime in the state.
Codenamed Ops Cantas Silver I, the crackdown last month saw the arrests of members of the 04 Gang active in the state.
Chief Police Officer Datuk Hasnan Hassan said among the high profile murder cases they were involved in was the shooting of a Datin Seri and seriously wounding her eight-year-old daughter outside a restaurant in Jalan Hujan Emas OUG, Kuala Lumpur on July 6, 2016.
“The bullets in the Datin Seri shooting case matches the bullets in a murder case and two shooting cases in Perak,” he told reporters at the police headquarters yesterday.
Hasnan said 26 suspects were nabbed in Perak, Selangor, Melaka and Johor, while the remaining 10 were already in custody for other offences.
“The suspects are aged between 20 and 60. All the suspects are male and they are active members of the 04 secret society.
“Most of them are leaders of the 04 Gang in their area and one of them has a ‘Datuk’ title. But the title was not obtained in Malaysia,” he said.
Police also seized jewelleries, cash, properties, bank accounts and vehicles worth about RM4.5 million from the suspects.
Hasnan said all the suspects were remanded for 28 days starting from Jan 27 to Feb 24 under Section 4(5) of the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 — SOSMA.
“They are also investigated under the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act,” he said.
Hasnan said investigations have been completed and they would be produced at the Ipoh Sessions Court today to face charges.
“They will be charged under Section 130V of the Penal Code for being a member and assisting an organised criminal group,” he said.
All the suspects will be ferried in a Black Maria (caged big lorry) and escorted by the Special Task Force On Organised Crime (STAFOC) to the court.
Several roads leading to the court complex from the police headquarters is expected to be closed in between 7.45am to 8am tomorrow.
Hasnan said police are also tracking down several more 04 Gang members still at large.
