Police inspector killed in crash with garbage truck

SEGAMAT: A 30-year-old police officer was killed when the high-powered motorcycle he was riding collided with a garbage truck in Jalan Genuang near here today.

Inspector Irwanzi Idrus, who was attached with the Segamat Criminal Investigations Department, was pronounced dead on arrival at the Segamat hospital.

District police chief Superintendent Raub Selamat said in the 3pm incident, Irwanzi was riding a 1,000cc Honda CBR, heading to the Segamat Hospital to carry out an investigation into a case.

"At a junction near KM4 of the Labis-bound lane of Jalan Genuang, the truck abruptly turned right. The victim, unable to avoid the lorry, collided with the vehicle," said Raub.

He said staff at the police station recently celebrated his 30th birthday on March 1.

Irwanzi is survived by his wife, Noraslina Refin, in her 20s, a three-year-old daughter and three-month-old son.

The 50-year-old truck driver was not injured. The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless driving and causing death.
