A 13-year-old boy has been caught driving a car, with his mother and a toddler in the back seat.

Officers who stopped the car were astonished when the family explained the situation, insisting it was "only a short journey".

Police stopped the car in Peterborough, Cambridgeshire on Saturday morning after spotting it being driven in a  suspicious manner.

When they went to speak to the driver it turned out to be a 13-year-old schoolboy.

In the back of the car was the boy's mother, who had a toddler, who was unrestrained and sitting on her knee.

It was not clear whether the mother was unable to drive, but she told police that it was only a short journey.

The teenager was stopping yesterday morning in Peterborough by a team from the Cambridgeshire, Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire Road Policing Unit.

In a tweet, a spokesman for the Cambridgeshire, Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire Road Policing Unit, said: "Car being driven in Peterborough by a 13 yr old boy, also in the car was an unrestrained 2 yr old sitting on mums knee !!!, reply was 'It's only a short journey'."

The spokesman added officers were looking at "numerous offences" in the case.
