Powerful midnight storm batters Penang island, mainland

GEORGE TOWN: A powerful rainstorm battered parts of the island and mainland here last night, triggering minor flash floods, felling trees and causing general chaos.

At midnight, the Local Fire and Rescue Department responded to two incidents of large felled trees – one, which landed on a house in Tanjung Bungah, causing some damage and the other, which fell across Jalan Perusahaan Bagan Lalang, Butterworth, bringing traffic to a standstill.

No one was injured in either incident, and both trees were cleared several hours later.

Three flash floods were reported state-wide: at the Butterworth-Kulim Highway, Taman Sentul Bukit Tengah and Kampung Tok Panjang in Bukit Mertajam.

Waters rose to ankle level, before fully subsiding at 1.30am.
