If the absence of Premier League football in the last few weeks is proving difficult to bear, then take heart from the fact the fixtures for the 2023-24 will soon be released.

Newly-promoted clubs Burnley, Luton Town and Sheffield United will be eager to discover who they will face in their first game back in the top flight, while Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur will start the campaign under new management.

These are the key details for the fixture release.

When are the fixtures for the next Premier League season released?

Thursday, June 15 at 9am British Summer Time, which is 4am Eastern Time in the United States.

When does the new season start?

The first games of the new Premier League season will kick-off on the weekend of August 12 and 13. Typically, the first game is selected by television for a Friday night slot, which would be August 11.

How are the new fixtures decided?

By a Premier League super-computer, although there are numerous factors to consider when compiling the fixture list.

Each of the 20 teams are placed in a ‘pairing grid’ which decides when they will play at home and away, before they are mixed up to decide the fixtures.

In each split of gives matches, each team should have no more than three at home and two away or visa versa. A team should never have three home or away league matches in succession.

A team playing at home on Boxing Day and will be away for the New Year’s Day fixtures.

Speaking of which, the Premier League tries to minimise travel on these key festive bank holidays.

The Manchester and Merseyside clubs will not play at home on the same day, and while London clubs clashing is unavoidable, clubs such as Arsenal and Tottenham will be kept apart.

When are the TV selections made?

It is worth remembering that the fixtures and kick-off times are subject to significant change because 200 of the 380 games are chosen for television broadcast.

Last season, the TV picks for August and September were released on July 5. The fixtures for October followed on July 29.

Expect a similar time-frame for this year’s TV picks.

Is there a winter break this season?

The Premier League’s ‘winter break’ returns after last season’s World Cup-affected campaign.

This will last from the weekend of January 13 to January 30. On each weekend, there will be five Premier League fixtures, ensuring each team gets what is in effect a two-week break.

When does the season end?

The final round of games of the 2023-24 Premier League season will be played on Sunday May 19.
