Premier League’s best finishers 23/24: Erling Haaland would actually be 318th!
It’s early in the season but these lads are showing no signs of rust in front of goal. Erling Haaland is actually underperforming on his xG!
We’ve had a good laugh at the players who are being most conspicuously owned by their xG stats, so it’s only right and fair that we acknowledge those at the other end of the scale who are making a mockery of the boffins’ projections.
1) Hwang Hee-chan (Wolves): +2.5
Expected goals: 0.5
Actual goals: 3
Scored three goals from an overall xG of 0.5. Not that it counted for anything – Wolves lost all three games in which he scored.
2) Evan Ferguson (Brighton): +1.6
Expected goals: 2.4
Actual goals: 4
Scored a hat-trick from an xG of 0.8 v Newcastle United. We mostly like how chuffed he looks every time he scores.
3) Solly March (Brighton): +1.5
Expected goals: 1.5
Actual goals: 3
Started the season on fire with three goals in the first two games. Not so much as a shot on target in the following two, the massive fraud.
4) Gustavo Hamer (Sheffield United): +1.5
Expected goals: 0.5
Actual goals: 2
Two goals from five shots is some casual kind of magic.
5) Odsonne Edouard (Crystal Palace): +1.4
Expected goals: 2.6
Actual goals: 4
Scored with his one shot v Aston Villa to catapult himself into this list, way above the Norwegian goalbot who scored once from nine attempts v West Ham.
6) Son Heung-min (Tottenham): +1.4
Expected goals: 1.6
Actual goals: 3
Scored three goals (all at Burnley) from an overall xG of 1.4. The armband seems to suit him.
7) Jhon Duran (Aston Villa): +1.3
Expected goals: 0.7
Actual goals: 2
Being Aston Villa’s back-up to Ollie Watkins suits him. The Colombian has a goal in him.
8) Dejan Kulusevski (Tottenham): +1.2
Expected goals: 0.8
Actual goals: 2
Hitting the target with only a third of his shots but Spurs won’t give a monkey’s.

9) Taiwo Awoniyi (Nottingham Forest): +1.2
Expected goals: 1.8
Actual goals: 3
Three goals in Forest’s first three games from three shots on target.
10) Christian Romero (Tottenham): +1.2
Expected goals: 0.8
Actual goals: 2
Goals against Brentford but he surely won’t stay on this list for long.
