Premier League clubs to receive millions in early merit payouts during coronavirus shutdown
Premier League clubs are set to receive millions of pounds in merit payments, normally due at the end of the season, to help ease their cash-flow crisis.
All 20 clubs have agreed to release a portion of the funds normally based on league positions in advance as they grapple with the implications of the coronavirus pandemic.
The payments range from several million for those at the foot of the table to more than £20million for the highest-placed clubs.
The Premier League has already received 100 per cent of its broadcast money for the campaign.
On Thursday, Southampton became the first English top-flight club to agree wage deferrals with players during the Covid-19 shutdown.
Premier League players have also launched a collective initiative called #PlayersTogether in partnership with NHS Charities Together - an umbrella organisation for over 150 NHS charities - to help generate and distribute funds "quickly and effectively to where they are needed most".
