Premier League: One positive coronavirus result registered at Tottenham from latest round of tests
A Premier League player or staff member at Tottenham Hotspur has provided the only positive result for coronavirus out of 1,197 tests carried out at the start of the week, with the top flight heading closer towards a full resumption of the 2019/20 season.
Spurs issued a statement on Wednesday to confirm that the club had been informed of a positive sample taken across Monday and Tuesday’s fifth round of testing, with the individual choosing to remain anonymous and entering a seven-day period of self-isolation.
The north London club also confirmed that the individual is asymptomatic, and will not return to the club until further testing has been carried out one the isolation period is complete.
“We have been informed by the Premier League that we have received one positive test for Covid-19 following the latest round of testing at our training centre,” a club statement read.
“Due to medical confidentiality, the individual’s name will not be disclosed.
“They are currently asymptomatic and will now self-isolate for seven days, in line with Premier League protocol, before undergoing further testing.
“We shall continue to strictly adhere to the Premier League’s Return to Training protocol, which ensures our training centre remains a safe and virus-free working environment.”
The latest figures mean that more than 5,000 Covid-19 tests have been carried out since the Premier League allowed clubs to return to training, with just 13 positive results.
A Premier League statement read: “The Premier League can today confirm that on Monday 1 June and Tuesday 2 June, 1,197 players and club staff were tested for Covid-19. Of these, one has tested positive.
“The individual who tested positive will now self-isolate for a period of seven days.
“The Premier League is providing this aggregated information for the purposes of competition integrity and transparency. No specific details as to clubs or individuals will be provided by the League and results will be made public after each round of testing.”
